The University of the East Red Warriors ended a remarkable summer campaign with a win against the then-undefeated National University Bulldogs in the finals of the Filoil Premier Cup.
Its a big boost for the morale of the boys in red as they whipped the Bobby Ray Parks-led team for the first time since last year's tournament. Lets have a break down of what happened in the finals.
UE Red Warriors :
Coaching : I know for a fact that coach Boyzie Zamar is a good coach. Well, UE's uprising even started last year when Zamar took over Jerry Codinera's role as the head coach. They have booked a win against Ateneo and a couple of back-to-back wins in last year's UAAP. During the finals game of the Filoil Premier Cup - late in the 2nd half, coach Boyzie is visibly not worried even they are facing a resurgence of NU's attack on offense. UE played a bad quarter in the 3rd canto, thanks to Parks who settled in defending UE's star point guard Roi Sumang. Sumang just can't hit anything when Parks was upfront and defending him. But come to the final quarter where NU's big men already in foul trouble, UE unleashed their attack and they even get the 5th and final foul on Parks. From there, UE controlled the ball game and tucked a title before heading up in the UAAP on June 29.
Roi Sumang : He is arguably the best point guard in the UAAP today. But the humble Sumang said that there is a lot more to improve on his game. He also said in an interview that there are a lot of players who are better than him. What a humble guy. Truly. But I don't believe you sir. Especially when you made Robin Roño crippled on the floor with your wicked crossover.
Charles Mammie : He is the biggest impact for UE not only for this game but for the whole tournament. He backs up on what his shoes say. (Look for the pics courtesy of Rick Olivarez). I will never get tired of saying this and you can quote me - Mammie will have the same impact as Greg Slaughter when he played for Ateneo.
NU Bulldogs :
Coaching : Coach Eric Altamirano played it good, its just that he lost some important players in the end. What if there's still a Bobby Ray Parks in the end game, things could have been different. He lost Jean Mbe and Parks early in the 4th and played with a disarray Alfred Aroga who committed his 3rd foul as early as the 2nd quarter.
Bobby Ray Parks : He is the lone bright spot in the NU lineup in the finals. He fired for 23 points even he got fouled out early in the final canto. He just can't control himself to commit two unnecessary fouls to disqualify him in the ball game. What if he is still in there on the 4th? Well, things might have been different. But a game is a game. There will be a winner and a loser. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, their mighty 21 undefeated streak is finally over. JMP
