2013 Filoil Premier Cup Qfinals Round-up: Its the Indian, Not the Arrow

Lets have a round-up of the Filoil Premier Cup QuarterFinals game yesterday between the San Beda Red Lions and the De La Salle Green Archers :

SBC Red Lions 66 - 63 DLSU Green Archers

SAN BEDA RED LIONS :

Coaching: In the first half of the game, coach Boyet Fernandez is just adjusting to the match up on the floor. Meaning, he is just playing man to man, person to person kind of a game. For instance, Baser Amer will be matching up with Thomas Torres, Ryusei Koga with Almond Vosotros, Rome with Teng, etc. Also, I noticed that since there are a lot of bad calls from the referees, CBF is just phasing the boys that when crunch time comes, he will unleash them. That's what happened. Down by 10 with under 4 minutes remaining   in the 4th quarter, he recalled Baser Amer on the bench. We all know that Amer will tear Thomas Torres apart. And yes, that's what happened.

Baser Amer : Baser didn't played his old self. He is committing too many turnovers in the first half and isn't making his usual shots. But I am watching this kid since he was a high schooler and I know he will redeem himself when it matters. He scored the last 6 points, 10 out of the 13 for the Red Lions to seal the game. Quoting Sir Rick Olivares "Baser Amer...aside from his 'maamo' looks, this kid does have an assassin heart".

Art dela Cruz : Before the game, I said to myself, "mahihirapan si Art dito, malaki yung Perkins". During the first half, Jason Perkins seems to be in control of their match up but Art never backed down. I know Jason Perkins is much heftier and heavier than Art, but we all know for a fact that Art is so much smarter. He adjusted and in the second half, I didn't remember Perkins converted a single field-goal.

Ola Adeogun: : I think Ola played well this game. He was a bit unlucky with his shots but he made sure that he made it up on defense. If not for the bad calls, I think Ola would have more impact in the game.

DE LA SALLE GREEN ARCHERS :

Coaching : I wonder what Gee Abanilla was thinking when he inserted Thomas Torres in place of LA Revilla who was playing solid and controlling the ball game. Favoritism? Also, Teng on Dela Rosa is bad match up for them. Teng will just wear himself up. Look at the 4th, he was visibly tired. The only good thing that Gee Abanilla has done is inserting Arnold Van Opstal whenever Ola Adeogun hitted the bench. AVO has more footwork than Kyle Pascual and scored some baskets with some pump fakes. But in the second half, SBC adjusted and CGA doesn't have a counter-adjustment. Their offense seems to be predictable by then. They will just pass the ball to Norbert or AVO and they will force their way inside. Bad call, Gee. Also, Rome seems to have Teng's number in this game. He knows what to do whenever Teng attempts for a fastbreak play.

Almond Vosotros : He played a good game. Good but not great. He missed the last two attempts from the outside. He is also visibly having a hard time against San Beda's Koga and Abarcar.

Jeron Teng : Rome dela Rosa. Yes, he scored a couple of times but Rome made it hard for him. I saw him a couple of times that he was talking to Rome and smiling. I can't help but think that Jeron is saying "Idol, wag mo naman ako pahirapan". Kidding aside, Jeron's offense is too predictable in this game or, Rome just know what will Jeron do.

Norbert Torres : If not for the foul trouble, he would have dominated against Ola. But CGA must create some plays for him. When he catches the ball, all he does is force himself inside the lane. That won't work especially in the UAAP.

** Special Mentions : La Salle's benefactor Danding Cojuangco seems to be disappointed after the game. He was seen scratching his head.

Of the 5 minutes that the heavily-recruited and hyped Kib Montalbo has played, he only have touched the ball for 3-5 seconds. You don't think so? Watch the replay.

Putting Robert Bolick on Utoy Abarcar is a bad idea. I would like to think that Bolick was already intimated when he was matched up against Abarcar. Abarcar and his Red Cubs before was mudering Bolick's Greenies then. You can see in his body language that he is not there.

To all that have watched the game live, have you seen two towering foreigners (the one in yellow w/cap and the guy in black)? The one yellow seems to be 7-feet tall and the one in black is a 6'6 guy. Yes, they will be San Beda's reinforcement in the upcoming years. JMP
