UE 77-75 UST
M for Meltdown. UST has the control of this ball early. They were knocking shots unbelievably from any spots from the court. Their main man Karik Abdul was just tearing Charles Mammie apart. He was just taking casual jumpshots and making it. Also, Jeric Teng, Kevin Ferrer and Tata Bautista were hitting from all cylinders. When we all thought that this one is over, UE turned on the heat. They made their defense tighter starting the 3rd quarter. Roi Sumang and Charles Mammie started everything for them and were aggressive in both end of the court. Mammie anchored on defense and Sumang orchestrated the attack of UE. There were some occassions that JM Noble helped the two with some timely steals and fastbreak plays. Visibly struggling is UST's Aljon Mariano. He just can't make any basket at all. One crucial play of the game happened in the 4th when Jeric Teng fouled a UE player and surprisingly, the refs called it an unsportsmanlike foul. The whole UST bench can't believe it.
After the game, coach Pido Jarencio was mad and ran into League Commissioner Ato Badolato for some explanation on that play involving Teng. Nevertheless, with this win, UE just proved to us that they are a legitimate title contender come UAAP time.
NU 74-57 SBC
M for Mastery. In the 3 years that I've been watching the summer tourney, I can't remember NU losing to SBC. Two years ago, NU escaping with a win via a Robbie Celiz' clutch 3. This year, they met twice and both resulted to an NU win.
In their first meeting, NU relied on the heroics of inspired Bobby Ray Parks. Down by 3, no timeouts remaining, and just a couple of seconds left, Parks rushed the whole court, escaped multiple defenders and heaved a desperation 3 to force overtime. In OT, David Semerad missed an uncontested lay-up and that sealed the win for NU.
In their semifinals meeting, NU defended tigher and suffocated SBC's offense, only allowing the Red Lions to score 57 points, their lowest the whole tournament. NU's balanced scoring is much better than SBC's one-man show of Baser Amer. They also out-rebounded the Red Lions. Parks was also not in his game, thanks to Rome dela Rosa but the bad shooting percentage of the whole Red Lions team will seal the deal for this game. For the record, NU hasn't lost in 20 games dating from last year's tournament. JMP
